Barney Schwartz Park: Design a play space that enhances the beauty of the surrounding environment.

Nestled into a gorgeous hilltop location amongst the oak trees, and overlooking a stocked fishing pond, the play space at Barney Schwartz Park could easily have been an eye-sore in an otherwise picturesque scene. Yet instead of trying to "hide" the play structure, our goal was to have the playground enhance and highlight the beauty surrounding it.

It was a privilege to work with Freda Berman, the Director of Public Works for the City of Paso Robles, the SSA Landscape Architects team, and our playground design team at Landscape Structures, Inc. on the project. We developed a Nature-Based "treehouse" design featuring a 22' tall play tower which integrated a 35' diameter shade. The tower provided incredible views of the pond and beautiful landscape below, while the green rounded shade made the whole structure blend with the historic old oak trees surrounding the pond.

Let's not forget that this is a playground though! Children love the tall tower and epic slides the stem off of it like branches in all directions. One slide travels from the structure all the way down a PIP hillscape, connecting the higher play area to a lower zone filled with spinners and spring toys!

The project has been lauded by the City and Community of Paso Robles, and is certainly a destination for other nearby communities!
